Quality, Endurance and Passion Aplenty at Le Mans

Chequered flag falls on FIA World Endurance Championship super season with a memorable Le Mans weekend for Gulf.

2019 marked the 50th anniversary of Gulf’s second Le Mans outright victory, and although there was to be no return to the podium for either of the two Gulf-sponsored cars, the weekend proved to be a successful one for Gulf on many levels.

The unveiling of Gulf’s LMP1 challenger at scrutineering on Monday of race week was by far and away the story of day two of the technical checks. The striking looking DragonSpeed BR1 car had acquired its blue and orange livery in secret, after running in its starred white colour scheme at the official test and, within minutes of it appearing, was attracting thousands of ‘likes’ on motorsport social media around the world.

The #10 DragonSpeed Gulf LMP1 – which paid tribute to the 1968, 1969 and 1975 outright victories that the brand secured at Le Mans – qualified seventh. There was a poignant moment on the grid before the start of the race, when the legendary 1968/9 Le Mans-winning Gulf Ford GT40 set out on a lap of honour in front of 252,000 spectators, appearing on the giant screen behind the 2019 Gulf car that paid homage to the Gulf victories (see attached).

The Gulf-DragonSpeed challenger looked competitive at the beginning of the race until a freak bodywork issue and an intermittent electric gear selection problem both sent the car back to the pits for repairs. The DragonSpeed crew all pitched in and worked diligently to return the car to the track no less than four times, but towards midnight, the gear actuation problem re-occurred and left the car stranded for good, two-thirds of the way around the circuit and with no choice but to retire.

Gulf Racing’s Porsche, by comparison, had a pretty trouble-free run. The car ran third in the 17-car GTE Am field for the opening hours of the race. The #86 briefly stopped out on track on Saturday evening, but quickly restarted and, apart from a spin while Team Owner, Mike Wainwright, was at the wheel, the car encountered few other problems, coming home eighth in GTE Am. As a result of the Gulf Porsche finishing as fourth-placed of the FIA World Endurance Championship points scoring cars, the team moved up two places to sixth in the final championship standings.

Gulf social media pages were flooded around the Le Mans race week, covering the on-track action, but also portraying the impact that Gulf has had on the culture of the Le Mans 24 Hours and the enthusiast community in general. In the Le Mans commercial village, Gulf licensee, Grand Prix Originals, was doing great business in its shops, while the range of Gulf-branded clothing sold by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest – the Le Mans organiser – was also proving very popular.

“It seemed to me that Le Mans was awash with race fans sporting Gulf colours. It was my first time at the race, and everywhere I turned, there were people in Gulf clothing,” enthused Gulf Oil International’s Vice President of Marketing, Alexandra Ip. “The brand has built an amazing presence at Le Mans, something which you have to be here to appreciate fully, and something which, I know, impressed our many guests at the race.”

Gulf hosted 50 guests at this year’s Le Mans, from as far afield as Thailand and Argentina. One of the highlights for the group was the 50th anniversary cake cutting ceremony (see attached), attended by 1969-winning Gulf JW Automotive team member, Maitland Cook, who regaled the assembled party with stories of the team and its renowned characters, offering them a colourful insight of Gulf’s legendary racing operation of the 1960s and 1970s.

Guests could experience behind-the-scenes and know what is involved in staging all aspects of the Le Mans 24 Hours: touring the race control and administrative buildings and getting a first-hand experience of life in the Gulf teams’ pit garages during the race itself, as well as getting out around the circuit to view the action close up.

“Our Le Mans programme this year has been one of our best to date,” continued Alexandra Ip. “The feedback in all aspects has been extremely positive, and we look forward to continuing Gulf’s long and unique relationship with this amazing race in the years to come.”

Gulf Goes for Glory at Le Mans

Gulf adds DragonSpeed LMP1 to its 2019 Le Mans challenge in quest for outright honours

50 years on from Gulf’s second victory at Le Mans, the famous oil and fuel brand is delighted to unveil its partnership with the DragonSpeed LMP1 team at this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours.

DragonSpeed’s BR1-Gibson livery features the legendary Gulf blue and orange racing colours and pays homage to Gulf’s three outright victories at Le Mans –  prominently displayed on the car’s tail fin – while the rear wing flap lists the Gulf world championship sportscar victories at some of the world’s greatest race tracks.

“It all sounds a little romantic, and I suppose it is,” explains Gulf Oil International’s Vice President of Marketing, Alexandra Ip, “but Gulf is very proud of its incredible heritage in sportscar racing – and at Le Mans in particular – and so when the opportunity arose to compete 50 years on, in a state-of-the-art top category car, we couldn’t turn it down.

“We are very excited to partner with DragonSpeed, as they certainly know their way to the winner’s rostrum – as demonstrated at Daytona and Spa already this year, in becoming the first team to win its class in FIAWEC, ELMS and IMSA in a season – so we hope to challenge for a place on the overall podium.”

“If any brand embodies the excitement, passion and spirit of Le Mans, it has to be Gulf,” enthused DragonSpeed Team Principal, Elton Julian. “We’re thrilled to partner with this iconic brand and become part of Gulf’s amazing Le Mans and endurance racing history. This is a partnership the entire team is incredibly revved up about.”

DragonSpeed is a multi-programme race team with a great sportscar racing pedigree, and this season it has become the first team to have secured LMP2 class wins in the WEC, ELMS and America’s IMSA series.

Three weeks ago, the team also made its Indianapolis 500 debut, qualifying Britain’s Ben Hanley into the race in its first visit to the famed Brickyard – no mean feat considering the stellar names who didn’t make it into the field. Hanley forms part of the driver lineup for Gulf and DragonSpeed at Le Mans, together with Dutchman Renger van der Zande and Swedish pilot Henrik Hedman. Look out for the latter’s spectacular Gulf Le Mans tribute helmet.

The number 10 DragonSpeed machine will supplement Gulf’s long-standing partnership with the Gulf Racing GT team, whose Porsche 911 will also contest the LMGTE Am category in the world’s greatest endurance race.

Gulf’s has long seen motorsport as a proving ground for its products. During its recent partnership with Aston Martin Racing, Gulf became the most successful lubricant in the history of the World Endurance Championship with more than category wins to its name. Gulf also has a range of competition products ranging from gear oils to brake fluid. Gulf is delighted that its newly announced Car Care range will be used by DragonSpeed during this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours.

Qualifying for Le Mans takes place on Wednesday 12th and Thursday 13th of June, with the race starting at 15.00 CET on Saturday 15th June.

Aprilia Racing and Gulf aim for the top in MotoGP

Piaggio Group’s technical flagship, Aprilia Racing, joins forces with global lubricant icon Gulf, in a multi-year partnership deal for the world’s top motorbike racing championship.

After two years working together in global motorcycle racing’s upper echelons – in the World Superbike Championship arena – the iconic Gulf brand and Aprilia Racing marque continue to make concerted progress together, making the step up into the pinnacle of motorbike racing, MotoGP, thanks to a new multi-year partnership.

Gulf is one of the world’s great brands, with a strong offer in both fuel retail and in lubricants, boasting a wide product portfolio in all sectors from automotive to industrial.

“The opportunity to move up into MotoGP, as a major partner of Aprilia Racing was a logical next step forward after World Superbikes,” explains Gulf Vice President International, Frank Rutten. “Aprilia is one of the most successful racing marques of all time while Gulf, of course, has a long history of success in motorsport.  Making the move up to Grand Prix racing with a manufacturer that we know matches our ethos of quality, endurance and passion and our desire for progress.”

The entry of Gulf into this challenge is seen as an extremely positive move.

“We are delighted to be forging this new partnership with Gulf,” enthused Aprilia Racing CEO, Massimo Rivola. “It is an iconic brand with an impressive range of products and a great racing history. We look forward to writing the next chapter in this history over the coming years. I am very pleased to have Gulf working with Aprilia Racing in our upcoming MotoGP campaigns and it will be exciting to see these two great brands moving forward together.”

The Piaggio Group – for which Aprilia Racing is the technical flagship – is one of the world’s biggest motorcycle manufacturers, with more than 550,000 motorbikes per year sold across its brands, which also include Vespa, Gilera and Moto Guzzi, as well as Piaggio itself.

Gulf Motorcycle lubricants cover everything from scooters and small capacity motorcycles, to its dedicated range of  Superbike oils. Gulf has long used motorsport as a means to help develop and test new product. This step into MotoGP with Aprilia Racing heralds a further drive towards superior-technology motorcycle product from Gulf, as it seeks to conquer new, emerging markets as well as to strengthen its position in existing markets.

Aprilia is concentrating hard on MotoGP development for 2019, looking to be regularly in the mix at the sharp end of the MotoGP field. To this end, in January, Piaggio brought in former Ferrari Sporting Director, Massimo Rivola to head up Aprilia Racing. With two new crew chiefs and a talented rider line up of Italian, Andrea Iannone, Spaniard Aleix Espargaro and Briton, Bradley Smith, Aprilia is putting more resource than ever before into making strides forward in this intensely competitive series.

The 19 race MotoGP calendar features races across five continents and the 2019 season starts on March 10th in Qatar.
